Keeping a legacy alive

The 50th anniversary of Dr King’s visit provided a unique opportunity to ask not only how far society has come in that time but also what more needs to be done to address the three great challenges of racism, poverty and war of which Dr King mentioned during his acceptance speech.

Each project within Freedom City 2017 has been developed with legacy in mind, seeking a lasting impact in tackling at least one of these great challenges.

Inspired by Dr King and his campaigns and accomplishments, partners involved in the programme have worked to improve their practices in relation to equality, diversity and inclusion.

Newcastle University has used the opportunity to reflect on institutional practices and are actively taking forward a programme of work to embed equality and diversity across the whole university. Among legacy initiatives the University will be working towards accreditation under the Disability Charter and Race Equality Charter.
